Summary of a book chapter - Assignment Example The terrorists undergo various training that are well discussed in this chapter. They include, disguise techniques, clandestine travels, recruitment, communications, handling of weapons- including bombs and explosives, assassination and ambush techniques and even collection of intelligence and counterintelligence methods. Terrorists go to training camps to acquire particular tactics and gain proficiency in a variety of skills. They are taught how to handle and execute terror plans in target states and nations. Such training is usually of a wider array of tactics than that of the counterterrorism police forces. For example, training on Arson and bombs. Terrorist are taught on how to make and use explosives and incendiary bombs. They are provided with guidelines and instructions on how to operate these explosive devices in training camps. Teachings on the incendiary type of weapons give terrorist insights on how to make simple fire bombs using locally available materials such as bottles and inflammable mixture attached to a fuse. In the latter days though, they are taught how to make plastic bombs from plastique that are sophisticated explosives and not readily detectable by most modern airport security. These training camps equip terrorists with assassination and ambush techniques usually how to penetrate through security systems and kill at close range. Methods of clandestine approach, disguise and escape are incorporated with handling and use of handguns fitted with silencers. Such kind of training enabled the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in 2007. Another training is on how to raise money through extortion and kidnapping for ransom from wealthy families and employers. It is usually a little risk, but high-profit operation. These terrorists are also trained in recruitment, counterintelligence, and communication. Such training gives them proficiency in acquiring intelligence on

Civil War Amendments to the Constitution Research Proposal

Civil War Amendments to the Constitution - Research Proposal Example This feat is hardly attained by many constitutions across the globe. This paper expounds on the Civil War Amendments to the constitution. According to Bond (1997: 14), Civil War Amendments were made to address the welfare of African Americans in the United States. In particular, the amendments addressed the civil rights of African Americans and they marked the first attempts to accord equal rights to all American citizens, irrespective of their color, race and political affiliations. The Civil War Amendments to the constitutions are contained in the Thirteenth, Fourteenth and Fifteenth Amendments (Bond, 1997:35). The Thirteenth amendment that was ratified shortly after the Confederates surrendered in Virginia legally abolished slavery, which had been practiced in the country for long periods, and it was one of the major points of contention in the civil war. According to, Hoemann (1987: 37) the Thirteenth Amendment was the culmination of the Emancipation Proclamation that had earlier been drafted to bequeath African Americans the freedom from enslavement. It was approved in the Congress on January 31 in 1865 and it was ratified eight months later in December 6 of the same year. This amendment consists of two sections (Maltz, 1990,:45).

Air Quality in Tung Chung Essay Example for Free

Air Quality in Tung Chung Essay In summer, wind blow from south to east, there is low pressure on land and high pressure on sea, onshore wind from Central China and in winter, wind blow from north to west, serious air pollution in Tung Chung due to monsoon wind. As there is high pressure on land and low pressure on sea, offshore wind from Central China to Pacific Ocean blows air pollutants emitted by industries, power stations and vehicles from South China to Tung Chung. Secondly, another cause is human factors. The major developments on Lantau Island at present are the Hong Disneyland and Hong Kong International Airport at Chek Lap Kok, AsiaWorld-Expo and power station in Penny’s Bay. First, combustion of fossil fuels from the airplanes at the Airport worsens the air quality in Tung Chung. Second, busy vehicular flow to the airport, AsiaWorld-Expo and Hong Kong Disneyland and emits air pollutants. Third, fireworks at Hong Kong Disneyland produce air pollutants which are blown to Tung Chung by wind. Last, air pollutants also emitted from the Penny’s Bay Power Station. The major development project on Lantau Island in the future includes the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge. The commercial work and the busy vehicular flow after their completion will further produce more air pollution. The air quality in Tung Chung is likely to be worsened in future. Rapid economic development in South China results in serious air pollution in Tung Chung. As more industries are relocated from Hong Kong to South China due to lower production cost, there is a rapid cross-border flow of goods and people between Hong Kong and South China. There are some type of air pollutants: Carbon oxides, Carbon monoxide, Carbon dioxide and Sulfur dioxide. In conclusion, the air quality of Tung Chung is poor. Physical and human factors are the causes of air pollution in Tung Chung.

The Role of Labor in American History Essay -- Labor Historical US Ess

This brief history of more than 100 years of the modern trade union movement in the United States can only touch the high spots of activity and identify the principal trends of a "century of achievement." In such a condensation of history, episodes of importance and of great human drama must necessarily be discussed far too briefly, or in some cases relegated to a mere mention. What is clearly evident, however, is that the working people of America have had to unite in struggle to achieve the gains that they have accumulated during this century. Improvements did not come easily. Organizing unions, winning the right to representation, using the collective bargaining process as the core of their activities, struggling against bias and discrimination, the working men and women of America have built a trade union movement of formidable proportions. Labor in America has correctly been described as a stabilizing force in the national economy and a bulwark of our democratic society. Furthermore, the gains that unions have been able to achieve have brought benefits, direct and indirect, to the public as a whole. It was labor, for example, that spearheaded the drive for public education for every child. The labor movement, indeed, has served as a force for American progress. American Labor's Second Century Now, in the 1980s, as the American trade union movement looks toward its second century, it takes pride in its first "century of achievement" as it recognizes a substantial list of goals yet to be achieved. In this past century, American labor has played a central role in the elevation of the American standard of living. The benefits which unions have negotiated for their members are, in most cases, widespread in the eco... ...en excluded from the legal protections afforded to most workers in industry and commerce. Suffering from low pay, abominable temporary housing, lack of access to decent schools for their children, and often deprived of adequate medical care or safety protection measures, the migrant farm workers have been too often the "forgotten people" of the American economy. In recent years, the Farm Workers union-in the face of great difficulties-has been able to organize some of them, principally in California, and bring them the benefits of collective bargaining. Public response, in the form of consumer boycotts of grapes and lettuce at various times, has helped their cause. The beginnings of legislation, both federal and state, and attention to their plight in the press and on television, have brought some relief to the farm workers. But much remains to be done.

Gold Price Fluctuation Essay

The topic is selected for the project is the Gold price fluctuations and gold as a investment. I selected this topic because of the change in the price of gold and people’s interest in investing in gold as an investment. This topic is selected due to the fluctuating nature of gold and changing trend of gold price. Nowadays people tend to invest their money in gold so as they can increase their investment according to the price of gold at that particular period. Of all the precious metals gold is the metal where people invest more. gold is also at the mercy of stocks. When equities plummet, investors are often forced to sell gold for cash. But any significant dip can trigger a wave of buying an investors purchase gold at ‘discount’ prices resulting in a strong tug of war for prices. In this project I include the fundamental factors that contribute to gold’s strong price moves like price manipulations, supply and demand, safe haven and peer pressure buying, currency debasement, central bank buying. I also include the gold fluctuations and its impact on Indian economy. The importance of the project lies in the areas such as gold as one of the most valuable economic indicators, gold’s price elasticity is negative, rising gold price, gold as a safe investment, gold price determination move by landed costs and by the rupee-dollar exchange rate, factors affecting gold price fluctuation. It also deals with the fluctuation in the gold and its relation to oil markets. SCOPE OF THE STUDY The scope of the study is about the day by day changes in the price of gold and the reasons behind the change. It focuses more on the fluctuations and the interest of investors to invest in gold even though the price is getting higher. The study also focuses more on the fluctuation in the gold and its relation to oil markets. Oil and gold are the two main items in the economy now that tends to increase day by day. And a study related to those subjects seems important and reliable nowadays. The investment habit of people is changing day by day and my project deals with the people’s interest in investing in gold. And therefore the reasons for the fluctuations of gold price are necessary to be known. As we all know, of all the precious metals, gold is the most popular as an investment, investors generally buy gold as a hedge or harbor against economic, political, or social fiat currency crisis (including investment in market, declines burgeoning national debt, currency failure, inflation, war and social unrest. The gold market is subject to speculation as are other markets, especially through the use of future contracts and derivatives. The history of the gold standards, the role of gold reserves in central banking, gold’s low correlation with other commodity prices, and its pricing in relation to fiat currencies during the year 2007-2012 global financial crisis suggest that gold behave more like a currency than a commodity.

Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter - 2106 Words

Throughout history, Puritans have been known for extremely strict views towards other religions and people of other religions. Because they â€Å"deeply and fervently believed that they were doing the work of God†, Puritans often punished and shunned those who did not follow their rules or share their same views (Collier 62). In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne presents these popular ideas and truths about the Puritan way of living in a symbolic story of submissive defiance. He creates a strong feminist that contradicts the majority of the Puritan views on feminism. This rebellious main character, Hester Prynne, greatly sins and, thus, the town punishes her and shuns her in hope that she will repent and take on her proper duties once more. However, Hester shows the strength of a woman through this public humiliation, and takes on the role of a feminist by showing this feminine strength. Despite the attempts from society to force Hester into their Puri tan ways, Hester Prynne fulfills the notion of a feminist through her rebellious qualities and actions, and she proves to be a contrast by assimilating into the role of a Puritan woman and thriving in this role despite her public humiliation. By looking at their beliefs and their past, it is evident that the Puritans viewed women as inferior, weak, and dependent. Because of this view, Puritan societies believed women only proved to be useful in tasks such as household chores and raising children. Analysis Of Message From Mirror, Courage, Explore, Douglas

An analysis of 1 message from Mirror, Courage, Explore, Douglas â€Å"Live life to the fullest because you only get to live once.† Life is full of ups and downs and it will not always be perfect but if you live life great and look at it optimistically then it will be great. Life goes fast and is some moments of it you blink and the memory is gone. We need to look at life like it is great and easy. Take high school for example as you live in it, it is horrible and sucks but if you ask other people they might miss it and the memories that it holds. We need to make sure we make the most out the times that we have in life. Four poems tell of each of their ways of looking at life. Sylvia Plath(1932-1963) lived and short and very unhappy life, she†¦show more content†¦Their hair turns gray and they become in able to do many this others can. In Sylvia’s case she was alone and afraid because everything was disappearing in her life. She was losing her marriage and her c areer, she didn t have much left. In Courage, it tells about how in your whole life time you need courage. All of the big situations in life need courage and that one step of faith to get started. Sexton explains this by telling of a bunch of the courageous things you must do in your life. One that really stood out is, â€Å"The child’s first step/as awesome as an earthquake†(lines 2-3) When a little child goes to take one step it takes faith in the floor, hoping that it will not just walk away from them. Also it is the first thing that humans do that will stay with almost everyone. Sexton compares this to an earthquake, she this that a babies first step is equal to the effect of an earthquake. Meaning that it changes those people around it jarassically. Perry explained what earthquakes did to homes which was, â€Å" ripped the earth and knocked homes off their foundations.† This was compared to a babies first step. One is lead to think that these two are nothi ng alike but the courage it takes to just step once and try something that they have never done be fore is amazing.
